Live Scoring a Pickup Cricket Match in Nepal: Simple Apps and Spreadsheets

You're 12 overs into a pickup match in Tundikhel and someone asks, "What's the score?" You squint at a wet napkin, count the balls on your fingers, and quietly invent a number. Everyone nods. The match continues.

This is the universal pickup cricket experience in Nepal. It doesn't have to be. Here's how to actually score a match — apps, spreadsheets, or paper — without it becoming a part-time job.

The promise

By the end of this post you'll know three scoring methods, when to use each, and how to share the score with the group chat in real time. No paid apps required.

Method 1: The phone notes app (5-over backyard match)

Don't overthink it. For a 5-over, 6-a-side knock at Tundikhel or a school ground on Saturday morning, your phone's notes app is plenty.

Format:

Team A: 47/3 (5 overs)
- Bishal 18 (12)
- Anish 12 (10)
- Pranav 8* (6)
- Suman 2 (4)

Team B: ...

Total time to set up: 30 seconds. Total scoring overhead: one player updates between overs.

When this works: groups under 12 people, casual matches, no need for ball-by-ball history.

Method 2: A Google Sheets scorecard (proper 10-over match)

Once you're playing 8v8 or 10-over knockouts, paper math gets messy. A shared Google Sheet does the job and survives across weekends.

The minimum columns:

Method 3: A free scoring app

If you want ball-by-ball history, partnership stats, and a generated PDF scorecard, use a dedicated app. The realistic free options as of 2026:

• CricHeroes — Free tier covers most pickup needs. Adds your team to a public profile (some groups like this, others don't).
• CricClubs — Tournament-friendly, slightly heavier interface.
• TopYa! Cricket — Decent free scoring; cleaner mobile UI.

What to look for:

• Offline mode — Tundikhel data is patchy
• Free tier covers 10+ overs per match — some apps cap free matches
• Export to PDF or share link — you'll want to send the scorecard to the group

Pick one, use it for three matches, then decide if it's worth the friction. Most groups try an app, get tired of it, and go back to the Google Sheet.

Who scores?

This is the unspoken question. Three approaches:

1. The injured/sub player scores. Most pickup matches have someone sitting out a round. They get the job.
2. Rotating scorer per match. Each week, a different player. Spreads the burden.
3. The non-playing partner/friend. If someone brought a friend who's just hanging out, ask nicely. Buy them chai after.

What doesn't work: assuming the team batting will score. They won't. They're batting.

The minimum information for a "real" scorecard

If you want it to actually feel like a match, capture these:

• Total team score and overs faced
• Each batter's runs and balls (the order matters)
• Each bowler's overs, runs, wickets
• The result (who won, by how much)
• Date and venue

That's it. Strike rate, economy, partnerships — nice to have, not required.

Sharing the score live in the group chat

The reason to live-score in the first place: the people who couldn't make it want to follow along.

Two ways:

• Manual: After each over, paste a one-line update into WhatsApp. "End of 7. Team A: 58/2."
• Auto: Most cricket scoring apps generate a shareable live link. Drop it in the group at the start of the match.

The manual method is faster to set up but requires discipline. The live link requires no effort once the app is set up.

Tracking across the season

If your group plays weekly, season stats become the secret glue. By month four, you have:

• Top run-scorer
• Most wickets
• Best partnership
• Match of the season

When scoring goes wrong

Common scoring disputes in Kathmandu pickup cricket:

• Wide vs not wide: Pre-agree on the line. Most groups call wide generously to keep the match moving.
• No-ball: Front-foot rule rarely enforced in pickup. Decide at the start.
• Boundary disputes: If there's no rope, agree on landmarks before the match. "The tree" and "the white wall" are valid boundaries until they're not.
• Run-out: when in doubt: Not out. Pickup cricket is for fun. The third umpire is a chai vendor 50 metres away.
