Sports Venues in Kathmandu: The 2026 Map

You have 14 people, two cars, and a Saturday morning. Where do you actually play in Kathmandu without three WhatsApp threads and a parking fight?

This is the 2026 map. It covers the neighborhoods where you can find sports venues across Kathmandu and Lalitpur, what each area is good for, what it costs, and the trade-offs nobody mentions until you're already there.

How to read this map

Kathmandu's sports venue scene is dense but uneven. Most futsal courts cluster inside Ring Road and along the Patan side. Cricket grounds and bigger fields sit toward the edges — Bhaisepati, Tokha, Budhanilkantha. Badminton and indoor sports follow the population: more options in Lalitpur than in core Kathmandu, more options in residential pockets than in commercial ones.

We've grouped neighborhoods by what they're best for. Prices are ranges as of 2026 — call ahead or check Maidaan for the exact slot rate, because peak (6-10pm weekdays, all day weekends) runs 30-50% above off-peak.

Patan side — the futsal heartland

The strip from Jhamsikhel through Pulchowk, Sanepa, and Kupondole is the densest cluster of futsal courts in the valley. Multiple turf venues sit within a 10-minute walk of Patan Dhoka. Most run from 6am to 11pm.

• Best for: futsal, evening pickup games, after-work play
• Price range: Rs. 1,200-2,000/hr at peak, Rs. 700-1,200 off-peak
• Parking reality: street parking is tight; arrive 15 minutes early or be ready to walk 200 metres
• Monsoon notes: most courts here are turf with partial cover; play continues in light rain, cancels in heavy

Bhaisepati and the southern suburbs

South of Patan, Bhaisepati gives you bigger plots, easier parking, and family-friendly venues — turf courts with seating, cleaner washrooms, and academies for kids. The trade-off is distance: 20-30 minutes from central Kathmandu, longer in traffic.

• Best for: family bookings, kids' coaching, weekend bookings with parents watching
• Price range: Rs. 1,000-1,800/hr at peak
• Parking reality: ample; many venues have dedicated lots
• Monsoon notes: drainage is generally better here than in older neighborhoods
• Watch out for: evening dust before monsoon; the road from Ekantakuna can be slow at 6pm

Baluwatar, Maharajgunj, and the diplomatic belt

Baluwatar has fewer commercial futsal venues than Patan but a steady set of locals-only courts tucked behind residential lanes. Maharajgunj and Lazimpat skew toward badminton halls and indoor courts.

• Best for: quieter weekday evenings, badminton, residents who don't want to drive to Patan
• Price range: Rs. 1,000-1,600/hr for futsal; Rs. 400-800/hr for badminton courts
• Parking reality: mixed — some venues have lots, others lean on street parking
• Watch out for: some courts are tucked deep inside lanes; Google Maps will get you close but not to the gate

Chabahil, Boudha, and the northeast

Chabahil and Boudha sit on the busier ring of east Kathmandu. The futsal here is honest, mid-priced, and friendly to late-night bookings. Slots after 9pm often go for off-peak rates because the area is residential and venues want occupancy.

• Best for: late-night play, mixed groups from Mitrapark, Sankhamul, and Jorpati
• Price range: Rs. 900-1,500/hr at peak, Rs. 700-1,000 off-peak
• Parking reality: decent on weekdays, tight near Boudha on weekends and festival evenings
• Monsoon notes: Chabahil sections flood briefly; check road conditions before booking

Thamel and the inner core

Thamel is not where you go for serious futsal — it's where you go if you and your friends finish dinner near Mandala Street and decide to play. A handful of small turf venues sit within walking distance.

• Best for: spontaneous evening play, tourist-led mixed groups, post-dinner sessions
• Price range: Rs. 1,200-1,800/hr — Thamel commands a small "convenience tax"
• Parking reality: rough; consider taxi or walking from a paid lot
• Watch out for: noise and crowd density in peak tourist months (March-May, October-November)

Cricket grounds and bigger fields

Cricket needs real estate Kathmandu doesn't always have. The honest list is short: a few grounds in Tokha, Mulpani, Bhaisepati, and a couple of school grounds that open up on weekends. Box cricket cages are easier to find — Pulchowk and Sanepa have several.

• Best for: weekend morning slots (7-10am), office cricket teams
• Price range: Rs. 3,000-7,000/hr for a full ground; Rs. 1,500-2,500/hr for box cricket

Badminton, basketball, tennis

• Badminton — clusters in Lalitpur (Kupondole, Pulchowk, Sanepa), Maharajgunj, New Baneshwor. Indoor wooden courts cost Rs. 500-900/hr off-peak.
• Basketball — fewer dedicated commercial courts; school courts and outdoor public courts in Tundikhel, Patan Durbar Square area, and some private venues in Lalitpur.
• Tennis — narrower set; clubs in Sanepa, Maharajgunj, and Bhaisepati. Most require membership or a guest-of-member booking.

The honest trade-offs

• Traffic is the hidden cost. A Rs. 1,000 court that takes you 45 minutes to reach is more expensive than a Rs. 1,400 court 10 minutes away. Factor in fuel and frustration.
• Monsoon (June-September) cancels outdoor sessions weekly. Lean on covered turf or indoor venues during those months.
• Peak pricing is real. The same court can cost 50% more between 6-10pm than at 4pm or 11am.
