Monsoon-Proof: Sports You Can Still Play in Kathmandu
Sports that survive Kathmandu monsoon — covered futsal, indoor badminton, box cricket, basketball. Where to play and how to avoid cancellation chaos.
Table of contents15 sections
It's a Wednesday in July. You're 14 in a WhatsApp group, you've planned a cricket match for Saturday morning, and the forecast just dropped 80% rain. Half your group is already typing "let's cancel." Don't.
Kathmandu monsoon is heavy but predictable. Plenty of sports keep going from June through September if you know where to look and what to book.
The honest sport-by-sport monsoon report
| Sport | Outdoor in monsoon | Indoor/covered alternative | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Futsal | Light rain OK, storms no | Covered turf widely available | Easy pivot |
| Cricket | Outdoor cricket mostly stops | Box cricket indoors | Real alternative |
| Basketball | Slippery, unsafe in rain | Indoor courts available | Easy pivot |
| Badminton | Outdoor rare | Indoor courts everywhere | Default indoor |
| Tennis | Hard courts dangerous when wet | Indoor courts rare | Hardest hit |
| Table tennis | Indoor only | Plenty of venues | Year-round |
| Squash | Indoor only | Limited but available | Year-round |
If you only play one sport and it's outdoor cricket on dirt, monsoon hurts you. If you can flex to any of the indoor options, your sports life continues uninterrupted.
Covered futsal turf — the easy answer
The biggest unlock for Kathmandu sport in monsoon is covered futsal turf. Many venues across Jhamsikhel, Pulchowk, Sanepa, Kupondole, Chabahil, and Bhaisepati now have roofed pitches with side walls — full play in any rain.
What to check before booking:
- Is it fully covered or partial? Partial means you'll get wet under wind-driven rain.
- Does the turf drain well? Older turf pools water near corners. Ask if the venue has had flooding complaints.
- Are the side nets up? Open sides plus rain = water on the pitch even under a roof.
- Floodlight reliability. Monsoon means evening play. Power cuts still happen.
As of 2026, covered futsal in Kathmandu runs roughly Rs. 1,400-2,200/hr at peak (6-10pm) — slightly more than outdoor. Worth it from June through August.
Box cricket — the cricket compromise
If your cricket group can't accept a full pause from June to September, box cricket is the answer. Indoor cricket on synthetic pitches with side nets, played in turf-walled boxes. Found at several venues in Lalitpur and Kathmandu — rules differ slightly per venue but the gist:
- 5-8 players per side.
- 6-8 over games, 30-45 minutes per match.
- Tennis ball with tape, not a hard ball.
- Wall hits count differently (some venues: out, some: 2 runs).
It's not real cricket. It is real fun, and your group keeps the muscle memory and the rivalry going. Pricing varies but Rs. 2,500-4,500 for an hour for 10-14 players is realistic for indoor cricket boxes in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
For the full breakdown, see our box cricket in Kathmandu guide.
Indoor badminton — the monsoon default sport
If you want a sport completely immune to monsoon, badminton is it. Kathmandu and Lalitpur have dozens of indoor badminton courts — wooden, mat, and synthetic. Courts run all year, prices barely change.
Monsoon-specific tips:
- Humidity affects shuttlecocks. Feather shuttles get heavier in humid air. Nylon is more consistent — switch for monsoon casual play.
- Court grip can change. Some wooden courts sweat in humidity. Wipe shoes before stepping on.
- Booking demand spikes. Everyone else figured out badminton works in monsoon too. Book 3-5 days ahead for peak hours.
For court types and quality differences, see our wooden vs synthetic badminton courts guide.
Indoor basketball — limited but real
Indoor basketball options in Kathmandu and Lalitpur are fewer than badminton but they exist. Most concentrate in Lalitpur and around Ring Road. Pricing as of 2026: Rs. 1,500-3,000/hr for half courts, Rs. 2,500-5,000/hr for full courts.
Pickup runs continue at indoor venues year-round. If your usual outdoor court in Lainchaur or Pulchowk floods, switch to a booked indoor half-court for the night.
The rain-cancellation playbook
If you organize matches, monsoon will test your group. Here's a tested playbook:
Booking strategy
- Book covered or indoor venues by default in June-September. Don't gamble.
- Confirm refund policy before paying. Most reputable venues do credit-not-refund. Some allow rescheduling within 7 days. A few are no-refund.
- Book later slots when forecast is uncertain. 7-9pm bookings give the storm time to pass.
Communication strategy
- Set a "go/no-go" rule with your group. Example: "We play unless the venue cancels or rain is heavier than 20mm/hr per the forecast 2 hours before."
- One person decides, not the group chat. Group decisions take an hour and someone always cancels last minute.
- Send the venue's address one more time in the group chat 90 minutes before. Reduces no-shows when the weather looks iffy.
Backup plans
- Have a second venue saved. If your primary turf floods, you can pivot in 30 minutes.
- Have a non-sport backup. A cafe in Jhamsikhel or Pulchowk for the post-match if rain wins.
Lightning — the rule nobody talks about
Lightning kills people in Nepal every monsoon, mostly during outdoor work but occasionally during sport. Rule:
- Stop play at first thunder, even if it's not raining.
- Get under cover. Cars are fine. Open shelters with metal roofs are not great but better than open turf.
- Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning to play.
- Indoor venues are safe. That's an extra argument for booking covered.
Where to find covered and indoor venues
Maidaan's filters let you sort venues by covered, indoor, or outdoor across Kathmandu and Lalitpur. For monsoon play, set:
- Sport: Futsal/Cricket/Badminton/Basketball
- Type: Covered or indoor
- Time: 6pm onward
- Neighborhood: yours
Browse the Kathmandu venue list or Lalitpur venue list and bookmark 2-3 monsoon-friendly options near you. For more on which months are which, see our best time of year for outdoor sports in Nepal guide.
What to bring in monsoon
- A waterproof bag for your phone and wallet. Even covered venues have drips and splashes.
- A second pair of shoes. Outdoor shoes to the venue, court shoes inside.
- A microfiber towel. Larger than you think you need.
- A change of dry clothes. Going home soaked is a cold ride.
- Mosquito repellent. Monsoon means mosquitoes at outdoor-covered venues at dusk.
Common monsoon mistakes
- Booking outdoor and "hoping" the weather holds. It won't.
- Believing 2-day forecasts. Kathmandu microclimate moves fast. Trust 6-hour windows.
- Not asking refund policy upfront. Then losing Rs. 2,000 on a cancelled turf.
- Ignoring lightning because "the rain stopped." Lightning travels miles ahead of the storm.
- Pickup at outdoor public courts in rain. Slippery surfaces cause most monsoon sports injuries.

Frequently asked questions
Is futsal worth booking in heavy monsoon?
Only if it's fully covered with side nets. Half-covered turfs flood at the corners. Confirm before paying.
Do venue refunds cover weather cancellations?
Policies vary. Most reputable Kathmandu venues offer credit toward a future booking, not cash refund. Some allow reschedule within 7 days. Ask before paying.
Can we play outdoor sport between rain spells in July?
Sometimes. Mornings (6-9am) often have clearer windows. Have a backup booked.
What about cricket nets in monsoon?
Many cricket net facilities in Lalitpur and Kathmandu offer covered nets. See our cricket nets in Kathmandu guide for which ones run year-round.
Are indoor venues more expensive in monsoon?
Slightly. Demand goes up, supply stays the same. Expect 10-20% peak premium on covered futsal and indoor courts from late June through August.
