1. Rooftop futsal on top of office buildings

Several commercial buildings in Tinkune, Anamnagar, and New Baneshwor have rented out their rooftops to turf operators. From the street you would never know. Once you climb the stairs, you find a 5-a-side cage with lights, basic shade, and pricing 20-30% below ground-level courts.

The catch: no parking, basic washrooms, exposed to weather. The win: late-night slots up to 11pm, smaller crowds, easier last-minute booking.

Look for them in office-heavy belts where land is too expensive for a ground-floor court.

2. School courts that open after 4pm

A handful of private schools in Maharajgunj, Bhaisepati, and Lalitpur rent their basketball, futsal, and tennis courts after school hours and on weekends. They do not advertise. You usually find them by:

• A friend whose kid studies there
• A Facebook post in a neighborhood group
• A discreet listing on Maidaan

These courts tend to be well-maintained (schools care about their floors), reasonably priced (Rs. 800-1,500/hr), and quiet (no party-of-15 walk-ins).

3. Multi-sport complexes outside the Ring Road

Two or three multi-sport venues sit in Suryabinayak, Tarkeshwor, and the Sankhamul-Mulpani belt. They host futsal, cricket nets, badminton, and sometimes basketball under one umbrella. A 30-minute drive scares off the casual crowd, which is exactly why regulars love them.

Pricing is friendlier — Rs. 200-500 less per hour for the same format — and weekend availability is better. Worth the drive if your group lives in clusters that make the longer commute worthwhile.

4. Old-school clay tennis courts inside private gardens

A small number of older homes in Lazimpat, Baluwatar, and Sanepa have private clay courts that the owners rent out to a handful of intermediate players. These are not commercial — they run on word of mouth.

If you play tennis seriously and want a clay surface in Kathmandu (rare), this is the route. Ask in tennis academy WhatsApp groups, or look for the occasional discreet Maidaan listing.

5. College gyms on weekends

Several college campuses in Pulchowk, Patan, and Kirtipur open their gym halls to outside groups on Saturdays and Sundays. Indoor basketball, badminton, and the occasional volleyball.

7. The fourth and fifth courts at popular venues

The most "hidden" venues are often the back courts at popular ones. The famous Jhamsikhel or Chabahil futsal complex has four courts; the front two are always booked, the back two have last-minute availability and sometimes a discount.

How to find them:

• Filter Maidaan listings by "available now" within 2 hours
• Ask at the front desk for "any court" instead of naming the popular one
• Book Monday-Wednesday instead of Friday-Sunday

The court is the same. The vibe is the same. The price is 15-25% lower.
