What "futsal" actually means in Kathmandu

In Europe, futsal is a hard-court 5-a-side game with a low-bounce ball. In Kathmandu, "futsal" is a catch-all term — most local courts are 5-a-side or 6-a-side games played on artificial turf, with a regular size 4 or 5 football. Some indoor venues do follow proper futsal rules, but the majority are turf-based.

Futsal in Kathmandu clusters around a handful of neighborhoods. Each has its own personality.

Jhamsikhel and Pulchowk

Dense with courts, both indoor and outdoor turf. Popular with the after-work crowd from Patan-side offices. Expect peak slots (6-10pm) to be booked out 2-3 days in advance, especially Friday and Saturday.

Sanepa and Kupondole

Smaller scene than Jhamsikhel, but the courts that exist are well-maintained. Good if you work in the area and want a 7pm slot without crossing the bridge.

Baluwatar and Naxal

A few solid options here, plus easy access from the northern half of the Ring Road. Slightly older crowd, slightly less peak-hour pressure.

Chabahil and Boudha

Late-night slots (9-11pm) are easier to grab here than in Patan-side venues. Useful if your group can only meet after 9pm.

Bhaisepati and southern Lalitpur

The newer end of the futsal map. Bigger compounds, more parking, and a noticeable family/parent presence on weekend mornings.

Thamel

A handful of courts cater to a mix of tourists and locals. Convenient if you're staying in the area, but peak pricing reflects the location.

Fair prices in 2026

Prices are ranges, not fixed. They depend on day, time, indoor vs. outdoor, and whether floodlights are running. Treat these as 2026 reality checks, not quotes.

• Peak (most expensive, hardest to book): Friday 6-10pm, Saturday 5-10pm, Sunday 5-9pm.
• Sweet spot (cheaper, still social): Tuesday-Thursday 7-9pm. Half the price of weekend peak. Less group politics about timing.
• Bargain (almost empty, almost cheap): Weekday mornings and early afternoons. Good for retirees, freelancers, and night-shift workers.

Book 3-4 days ahead for peak slots in Jhamsikhel, Pulchowk, and Sanepa. Same-day is realistic for most weekday off-peak slots and for late-night slots after 9pm.

What to bring (and what not to)

• Studs or turf shoes — depends on the surface. Long metal studs are usually banned on artificial turf. When in doubt, turf-sole shoes.
• Two balls. One always goes flat or out of the compound.
• Water for the whole group. Most venues sell water but the markup is real.
• Shin guards if you're playing competitively. Optional for friendly matches, but a misplaced kick on a turf burn is no fun.
